Monday, August 21, 2017, was supposed to be a day when area residents, students, and staff were able to see a solar eclipse which blotted out approximately 98% of the sun. Instead, what eclipse viewers saw were clouds, lots of clouds. Though the solar eclipse was blocked by heavy cloud cover schools in USD 475 were still able to use the event as a learning opportunity.

The Planet Protector Club is a group of 3rd through 5th-grade students within the school that meet on a monthly basis with 3 staff sponsors. The club collects recycling material from around the school and the students involved work to educate their classmates on the importance of keeping the planet in good shape. This partially grant funded program is supported by the building and the PTO which allowed them to deploy several receptacles for recycling around the building.
