Walking in Support of Freedom

FORT RILEY/JUNCTION CITY, KAN. – Freedom Walks are held around the nation every September 11th, in remembrance of the lives lost on 9-11, to honor all women and men in uniform, and to support military families. This year, the 12th Annual Freedom Walk at Ware Elementary will be held on Friday, September 7, 2018, at 1:30 PM. Other schools in USD 475 will hold Freedom Walks on September 11, 2018, at various times.

This tradition started in 2006 when the first Freedom Walk in Kansas was organized in USD 475 at Ware Elementary. Because of the many military children that attend Ware and the high military student population in Geary County Schools organizers wanted to show their appreciation and support for the community.

The Ware Elementary Freedom Walk will begin in the school’s main gym at 1:30 PM with a patriotic sing-a-long immediately followed by classes exiting the building and walking through the newly built portion of the McClellan Neighborhood in Fort Riley, Kansas.

Kindergarten through 5th Grade students have made patriotic banners to carry during the Walk which will include the appearance of the Fort Riley Mounted Color Guard, the Fort Riley Band, and Fort Riley Fire Department. Soldiers from the 1-5 Field Artillery will also join students and staff during the walk.

The Freedom Walk is open to the public as organizers encourage supporters to join the procession by walking between the 5th Graders and the fire truck. Supporters can also line the parade route, from Ware Elementary heading east on Olympic Street through the neighborhood and then heading back to Ware via Richmond and Sunset Drives.

Once students are back in their classrooms, the PTO has generously donated popsicles for everyone to enjoy.

Please be aware that if you plan on attending the Ware Elementary Freedom Walk you must show a valid driver’s license and any other official information required by gate security at one of the public access gates. Each passenger will also need a valid photo ID.

Other Freedom Walks in USD 475 will occur at the following date and times (the following list may not be all-inclusive, for more information on a specific building contact the respective office or principal).
