General Session is an annual event held at the Junction City High School where staff from all across USD 475 come together for a begin of the year pep rally! The event often includes a keynote speaker and some sort of entertainment which is generally organized by the Marketing and Media Relations Department. This year General Session opened with an introduction and welcome from Melissa Sharp, Principal of Junction City High School. Sharp said that she had the pleasure of also introducing the JCHS JROTC who provided a portion of the opening ceremony.
After the opening section of the 2018 General Session, which included a video presentation of district administrators singing in the car and a “The Office” theme made with USD 475 staff, those in attendance heard a compelling speech about the impact staff has on students given by Interim Superintendent Dr. Beth Hudson. At the conclusion of Dr. Hudson’s speech, the keynote speaker was introduced and captivated the crowd for the next hour.
Dr. Randy Watson, this year’s keynote, was named Kansas Commissioner of Education by the Kansas State Board of Education in November 2014. He assumed his role in July 2015.
As the state’s chief education officer, he provides leadership to the Kansas State Department of Education in carrying out the policies and programs prescribed by the State Board of Education to ensure that necessary oversight and support is provided to assist Kansas schools, educators, and students in achieving their goals. Some of these goals, he stated, could be in the ever-evolving technology, automation, and STEM-related workforce.
