The Elks Lodge hosts an essay contest once a year. This year the theme was “Why Our Veterans Are America’s Heroes” To be eligible, the students must be enrolled in fifth through eighth grade. They must submit an essay not to exceed 300 words. Essays were submitted from Fort Riley Middle School, Sheridan Elementary, and Spring Valley Elementary. The essays submitted by students from USD 475 were reviewed by Elks Lodge 1037 Committee, and local winners were forwarded to the district and state levels.
The winners at the district level and a winner at the state level are as follows:
First and second place winners at the 8th grade level from Fort Riley Middle School were Joniel Lewis, first place and Lisanit Vega Martinez, second place. First, second, and third place winners at the 5th grade level from Sheridan Elementary were Liam Throener, first place; Lance Lock, second place; and Kirsten Walton, third place. Third place winner at the state level is Joniel Lewis.
Each winner will receive a Wal-mart gift card. The Elks Lodge 1037 thanks all of the other students who participated in the 2017-2018 Essay Contest. There will be another opportunity for USD 475 students to participate in this essay contest next year!
