The Kansas Association for Youth (KAY) Club is a character-building, leadership training, service organization directed by the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA). Membership in the KAY Club is open to all students, boys and girls, grades 7-12 whose schools are members of the KSHSAA. FRMS allows 6th graders to join the organization since our school consists of grades 6-8. Through KAY, students learn lessons in leadership and service; it also teaches students about the importance of assuming their citizenship responsibility. All FRMS students must have a service goal for the year and joining KAY Club would be an excellent way to earn service points throughout the year.
The KAY theme for this year is “Set Sail…Lead-Yer-Ship”. Every member of KAY has value and can make a difference in the lives of others. Participation in leadership and service activities help to build a student’s self-confidence. When students believe in themselves, they are capable of great things.
KAY Club has an annual service project for The Leukemia &Lymphoma Society. (Pennies for Patients) (Pasta for Patients). Students and Staff are asked to donate $1.00 to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. FRMS was recognized in 2017 for our donations of more $10,000 from the past six years. In 2016-17 the school raised $1,746.16.
Collecting over $800 qualifies the school for a group of no more than 35 to an Olive Garden Party. Rolinda Smith makes a trip to Manhattan to pick up the salad, bread sticks, and pasta and brings it back for the students.
Last year, one of the Teams decided to get more participation with a pie throwing contest. When students donate $1.00, they get a ticket to vote for a teacher to have a pie thrown in their face. This year, there were more Teams doing this sort of competition.
The Kay Club also has food donated for Wheels of Hope, as well as donating to local nursing homes at the holidays, and collecting pop tabs for Ronald McDonald Charities.
