Nat Geo KS Floor Map at Franklin

Franklin Library hosted the district’s Nat Geo giant Kansas floor map last week. Students gathered in the library to learn about Kansas Geography by walking all over the state! The National Geographic Map of Kansas was brought to USD 475 when Kathy Benton, 3rd grade teacher at Franklin, went to Colorado to work with Nat Geo and a group of teachers to develop learning activities for the maps. Linda Bongers, Director of Library Media for USD 475, ordered the Kansas Map for the Instructional Resource Center to use around the district.

The students who had the opportunity to use the map at Franklin are using maps, graphs, photographs, and other representations to describe places and the relationships and interactions that shape them. They are also learning to use symbols, legends, the compass rose, and cardinal directions to locate and identify land forms, bodies of water, natural resources, and important historical places in Kansas.
