With the change in weather, who could think of a better way to spend an afternoon than with a nice cup of cocoa? Fort Riley Middle School StuCo hosted a Cocoa and Chalking event on December 6, 2017, for both young and older alike. Parents and students were invited to enjoy cocoa and treats while they learned to create a masterpiece with pastel chalks. Led by Mrs. Coughlin, Art Teacher at Fort Riley Middle School, parents and students drew a winter wonderland scene with a snow-filled tree.
Techniques were shared with those in attendance that included using the edge of a pastel to work quickly and create large blocks of color. Students were also instructed to break, yes break, a stick in half and use that. Altering the pressure applied to the pastel also created different degrees of texture on the paper. Blending was also taught, both by using different colors of pastels and by using cotton balls or fingers. Lastly, scumbling was used to create a textural effect to the tree.
Parents and students enjoyed an evening of learning, art, and cocoa provided by FRMS StuCo. Special thanks to the students and staff members who helped during the event. It couldn’t have been a success without you!
