The “Walk a Mile Day” was created in 2006 by the Geary Community Healthcare Foundation. In 2012, the name was changed to “Bramlage Family Walk a Mile Day” in honor of the Bramlage family and their commitment to health and fitness. These district activities promote healthy lifestyles at a young age. At each participating school, drawing slips will be handed out to all participating students when they have completed their mile. Students will be entered in a drawing for a bicycle or scooter donated by the Bramlage Foundation, each with a helmet donated by the Safe Kids Foundation, which will be given away at each school after their walk.
October 4th is also International Walk & Bike to School Day. The Junction City area has a Safe Routes to Schools program in an effort to support walking and biking to local schools. This program is sustained by efforts of parents, school staff , representatives from law enforcement, and community leaders to improve the health of children by enabling and encouraging them to walk and bicycle to school. Efforts are made to examine conditions around schools and conduct projects and activities that work to improve safety and accessibility and reduce traffic near schools. As a result, these programs help make bicycling and walking to school safer, encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle from an early age.
Below we have listed the date and times of the Walk a Mile for Geary County Schools. Parents are encouraged to join their students at this event!
