Labor Day

USD 475 schools will be closed on Monday, September 4, 2017 in observance of Labor Day.

Labor Day is the federal holiday celebrated on the first Monday in September, honoring the American labor movement and the contributions that workers have made to strengthen the well-being of the country. It may also be considered the unofficial end of summer and the beginning of the new school year.

In the late 19th century, Labor Day was promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor as the trade union and labor movements grew. The first parade was organized in New York City and the first state to make the day an official public holiday was Oregon. It was declared an official federal holiday in 1894. The first proposal for the holiday included a street parade followed by a festival. Labor Day is still celebrated in cities and towns across the United States with parades, picnics, barbecues, fireworks displays, and other public gatherings.

Geary County Schools USD 475 wishes our community a fun, safe, and enjoyable Labor Day weekend!
