Board Recap – August 21, 2017

The Geary County Schools Board of Education met during a special meeting on August 21, 2017, at the Devin Center for Educational Support in Junction City and discussed two major topics related to funding and finance in the district. The first topic for discussion will also be open for public comment in September allowing community members the chance to voice opinions related to the district budget as is done annually. During the meeting on Monday, the Board of Education voted in favor of publishing the budget presented to them, no changes were made from the first presentation earlier this month. The budget which was approved for publication by the Board of Education will be available for the community starting on August 22, 2017, via the district website. You can find the budget online bu visiting the current district website ( and then selecting “Board of Education.” The budget is located in the “Budget Information” page. This year’s budget will also be made available in an upcoming Daily Union newspaper issue.

The second major topic of discussion was the 2017-2018 negotiated agreement. Executive Director of Human Resouces, Mona Manley, addressed the Board of Education and presented the updated agreement for the Board’s approval. The contract was ratified by the JCEA, who represents the teachers in the district, prior to it being presented to the Board. The Board of Education voted in favor of the agreement.

Following the public portion of the meeting was an Executive Session to discuss personnel matters.

The Board of Education will meet next on September 5, 2017.
