A significant portion of the student population in Geary County Schools USD 475 is related in some way to the military, specifically, Fort Riley. Due to this fact, the district has a unique opportunity to work with the nation’s heroes on a daily basis. Last week was no different as USD 475 loaned their very own Executive Director of Communications, Mat Droge, to the installation for a full-scale disaster exercise.
“I absolutely love working with the Public Affairs Office for Fort Riley and when asked to be a role player for their disaster exercise, I couldn’t say yes fast enough. Getting the chance to see media relations from a different perspective was a really great experience and working through the scenario with Public Affairs was a great way to strengthen the ties between USD 475 and the Post.” – Exec. Director of Communications, Mat Droge.
Droge was tasked with playing a reporter for the day and experienced the simulated disaster scene as any media agency might during the real thing. Some of his photos are included in this article. The exercise included a simulated tornado damage neighborhood and the scenario encompassed areas around the installation.
This exercise allowed emergency responders at Fort Riley the opportunity to train together on a scenario that involved severe weather damage throughout a 24-hour period.
