Gone Fishing

There was a time that Kansas kids grew up outside, every minute of summer was spent enjoying the fresh air: working on the family farm, catching tadpoles in the ponds, and skipping rocks at the creek. Values learned from these times (responsibility, self-reliance, hard work and sharing) carried over into their lives. This summer there are opportunities for youth to enjoy the outdoors locally.

For family fishing adventures, you need not look any further than the Geary State Fishing Lake. The American Legion Family hosts an annual Geary County Fishing Derby May 20, 2017. This is a free event for children ages 8 to 17. Rods, reels, tackle and bait are provided for those who don’t have their own. For more information please contact the American Legion (785) 238-2432.

Outdoor Kansas for Kids program mission is to provide multiple outdoor recreation opportunities for Kansas youth with adult mentoring to encourage outdoor recreation. Across the state of Kansas each year, over 40 sites sign up to host the O.K. Kids Program. Participation has steadily grown through 2017 with over 13,000 participants and their guardians annually enjoying their day outdoors. Events are free to all participants and open to all. One of these opportunities is the Kids Fishing Clinic offered at Milford Lake on June 4, 2017. For more information please contact (785)238-5323.

Help youth seek out more opportunities locally, spending the summer outdoors learning the same values: responsibility, self-reliance, hard work and sharing.
