National Dance Like a Chicken Day

Nana na na na na na. Nana na na na na na.

May 14th is “National Dance Like a Chicken Day.” The original Swiss song was entitled “The Duck Song” which was later changed to “The Bird Song” in the 1970s. It entered the Dutch charts and remained for over seven months in the 1980s which started the international success of the song and dance craze. Since that time, the song has been adopted in the United States as “The Chicken Dance.” Over 140 versions of the song have been recorded worldwide, including various versions that were released by Walt Disney Records.

” The Chicken Dance” is accompanied by a dance as follows:

  • At the start of the music, shape a chicken beak with your hands. Open and close them four times with the beat of the music.
  • Make chicken wings with your arms. Flap your wings four times with the beat of the music.
  • Make a chicken’s tail feathers with your arms and hands. Wiggle downwards during the next four beats of the song.
  • Clap four times during the next four beats of the music while rising to your feet.
  • Repeat.
