District Celebrates School Nutrition Employees

USD 475 is celebrating School Nutrition Employees during the week of May 1, 2017, which is School Nutrition Employee Week. School Nutrition Hero Day for Geary County Schools is Friday, May 5, 2017, and USD 475 would like to recognize directors, managers, staff, parents and other champions for school nutrition. Let this week serve as a reminder for all the work they do in our schools and don’t forget to thank them for helping to keep our kids a little more healthy.

As the Director of Child Nutrition for Geary County Schools USD 475, I have to say that we have some great people on our team. Many don’t often realize just how early quite a number of our people who cook student meals start their day. Most of the people who cook meals in the district report to work at 5:00-6:00 in the morning. Cooks at the Central Kitchen are preparing 1,100 breakfasts and 1,725 lunches and Ware provides 600 breakfasts and 1, 445 lunches to Fort Riley schools every day. When there are menus with soups, chili, or spaghetti the numbers are even higher because the other schools with kitchens do not have the capability to prepare these items. Our nutrition employees receive food safety classes as they begin work each year or as they are hired and are refreshed regularly to keep the students safe. Sack lunches are one of the most labor intensive things these employees do and already for May the Central Kitchen will be preparing 2,655 or more and Ware will be preparing more than 1,100 for all the various Field Trips in the district. The Child Nutrition Team is hard at work making and serving meals that meet federal guidelines and that kids will enjoy.

Between preparing healthy meals for USD 475 students, adhering to strict nutrition standards, navigating student food allergies, and offering service with a smile, school nutrition professionals are true heroes. On Friday, May 5, 2017, we will end School Nutrition Employee Week (May 1-5) with a bang, when we celebrate the 5th Annual School Lunch Hero Day! School Lunch Hero Day is a chance to showcase the difference school nutrition professionals make for every child who comes through the cafeteria. School Lunch Hero Day provides you with the perfect opportunity to recognize the hardworking professionals in your school cafeterias. I would like to say “Thank You” to our wonderful nutrition services staff for the outstanding work they do each day to serve the students of Geary County Schools.  You are all greatly appreciated!!! -Dr. Corbin T. Witt, Superintendent of Schools, Geary County Schools, USD  475
