Trista Pickard, a kindergarten teacher at Fort Riley Elementary, was one of six Shining Stars for the month of April 2017. Geary County Schools USD 475 awards the Shining Star several times a year to individuals who exceed expectations in the areas of service to the district, professional achievement, community service, and impact on the perception of the district.
When walking by Mrs. Pickard’s classroom you will often hear her using engaging ways to capture her students’ attention such as using different voices. Students learn with puppets in her classroom and technology as well.
Not only are the academic needs of her students met, but the emotional and social needs are met as well. Students with a variety of needs have entered her classroom throughout the years and through devoted time and many conversations, she is able to provide opportunities to help parents find resources. She has the ability to relate to many of her student’s parents regarding the military lifestyle; Trista is a military wife herself. Often, she has been able to connect families to people, programs, or organizations at Fort Riley that can help and provide support.
Mrs. Pickard recently stepped into the Team Leader role for the kindergarten grade at Fort Riley Elementary. Long before being a team leader, she mentored teachers, staff, and community members.
She has the desire to help others which goes well beyond the parameters of Fort Riley Elementary or USD 475. She is actively involved with her church, participates with weekly bible study groups, and volunteers her time in her church choir.
“Without hesitation, the Fort Riley Elementary family nominates Trista Pickard for the Shining Star award, as she is an exemplary representation of what this award encompasses.” – Fort Riley Elementary
